Religion & Race

Christ's 'Great Commission' tells us to 'Go...and teach all nations...' which first starts with our congregation, and then proceeds outward. The Outreach ministry of Religion and Race serves to enhance congregational awareness of our nation's many diverse religious and ethnic heritages, and implementation of  ethnic and racial inclusiveness into the congregational  life of Kerrville United Methodist Church.

Throughout the Church Ecumenical year there are many opportunities to observe and commemorate our countries religious, ethnic and racial heritage as follows:

  • January - Birthday observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and serves to remind us of our interdependence and reaffirm our commitment to the betterment of our communities through love of one's neighbors and Christian Service.

  • February - Observed as Black History Month. Commemorate and celebrate black history & contributions into American society and particularly within the United Methodist Church.  The Southwest Texas conference is working
toward all the United Methodist churches to become totally integrated in the spirit of inclusiveness for people of all races and ethnic backgrounds  which was part of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream. That is, it makes no difference whether a person is African American, Asian, European, Hispanic, Slavic, etc. as the United Methodist Church has - Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors!"

  • April - Native American Ministries Day (4th Sunday) Commemorates native American history & contributions into American society and particularly within the United Methodist Church.

  • May - Methodist Heritage Sunday. One Sunday is selected to honor the Methodist heritage by committing itself to the continuing call of God and commemorate the union of the Evangelical United brethren Church and The Methodist Church. In 2007, May 20th was the 300th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Wesley.

  • May - Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Commemorates Asian Pacific American history & contributions into American society and particularly within the United Methodist Church.

  • September - Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15th thru Oct. 15th). Commemorates Hispanic American history & contributions into American
society and particularly within the United Methodist Church.

Prayerfully consider joining the Committee on Religion & Race and help encourage  our congregation to be aware of and share in the richness of our countries multi-ethnic & racial heritages that have actively participated in the evolution of the United States religious, educational, socio-economic, judicial, and political institutions of today.

This committee will develop church programs that will serve to promote ethnic and racial inclusiveness for all its members which is a vital part of the life and mission within our church family.

Please call or visit with Raymond and Billie Hardee for more details on this important church committee.
